Journal Entry 3

In the excerpt "Inventing the University" Bartholomae talks about how a student must 'invent the university' meaning create the mood. When writing the student has the power to take his readers to a different place and clearly demonstrate their thoughts or ideas. When he says to 'invent the university' he means to create a mood for the audience through the use of his essay.
Bartholomae suggests that by making students more aware of their own right to speak will make them better writers. Being an "insider" helps the student feel like they belong and in turn will fuel the motivation behind their essay.
The first essay that Bartholomae analyzed was n0t as well written as the second one. The second one was more elegant and appealing to a unviersity setting. Although the first essay indeed answered the question of creativity, its organization and flow arent apparent.

Journal Entry 2

Claim- Conceiving another child in order to save a previously exsisting child is not always detrimental.
Data- When surgeries are performed on young babies their memory is still developing so later years in life they will not have any recollection of the incident, nor the pain they may have experienced. Not always will the child receive complications and the outcome ( if possible.) Will be greater because you are saving your childs life.
Warrant- It is not fair to the child being born because it is viewed as if the parents are just using the child selfishly to save their oldest child. It seems as though the child is a Ginea Pig with no significant value and was just birthed to save another.
Grounds- If the parents a loving, caring unit the child will be just as cared for as the first born. It is not true that the family will not care for the second child or like him/her less just because their purpose was to save their sibling.
Backing- Many also believe that if the child was not originally wanted that the parents will not take as good care of him/her as they would the first one.
Qualifiers- Although, some parents are not as considerate as other the chances of a child being neglected or abused as a donor child are slim because that child is a necessity to the family as a unit. That child is what can possibly keep their sibling alive and neglecting the child will greatly reduce the childs will and ability to donate anything valueable without endangering his/her own life.

Argument Article

The claim being made in this article is whether it is morally justified or not to birth another child in order to save an older siblings life. This type of claim is Value. It is a value claim because it varies from person to person. Many individuals feel that having a child for the sole purpose of saving another is not morally just. Mostly because it comes off as if the parents do not care for the other child in hopes to save the other. However, now 18 years later the bone marrow donor, who saved her sister, is living a happy normal life. She is not affected by what happened to her at such a young age of two. Although the process of extracting bone marrow is painful at such a young age it did not impact her now. The family is now happy with two healthy daughters.
